SVINNA is implementing geothermal aquaponics using widely abundant low-heat geothermal resources, producing high quality products and exciting job opportunities for the future.
Breen Breeded in Green SL (BREEN), Spain
BREEN has worked on a pilot scale aquaponics system since 2010, developing the BREEN ‘Breeded in Green’ technology for sustainable aquaculture. BREEN has developed a high quality environmentally-friendly food production system with negligible environmental impact and minimized cost. The company is now up-scaling the aquaponics system with tilapia as the main fish species and various vegetables and fruits in the hydroponics units.
Institute of Global Food and Farming (IGFF), Denmark
IGFF is a private institute doing applied research & consultancy within aquaponics, urban agriculture and the economic organization of agri-food chains. IGFF are continuing the expansion of its aquaponics food division, and have in 2013 established a new subsidiary ‘Chinamapa ApS’ to be in charge of the commercial tasks of their aquaponics business. The institute is in the process of setting up a 600 m2 aquaponics demonstration plant as an urban roof top farm so they can conduct parallel research with aquaponics supporting urban food systems, climate resilience and cities farming for the future.
University of Iceland (UoI), Iceland
The University of Iceland is the leading university in Iceland, with 15000 students. The work in EcoPonics is undertaken within the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences. The School is a leader in teaching and research in the fields of engineering, computer science and natural sciences in Iceland. Their interest in EcoPonics is based on a recognised need to use renewable sources e.g. low-heat geothermal energy for food production and valuable spin-off opportunities.
