Successful aquaponics conference

The COST Action FA1305 EU Aquaponics Hub held the international conference Aquaponics – Research matter on March 22nd 2016. The conference was successfully organized by the University of Ljubljana with around 150 participants from more than 20 countries. The management group and working groups of the COST Action had meetings on March 23rd discussing the progress so far and next steps. Among decisions was to join forces of European Aquaponics SMEs establishing the Association of Commercial Aquaponics Companies. On March 24th the group visited a greenhouse and fish farm in Slovenia and ending the trip at Ponnods Aquaponics Farm.

The FishGlassHouse, a recently established, state-of-the art coupled aquaponic system located on the campus at University of Rostock (UoR, Germany) within the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (AUF) offers a STSM on POLYPONIC – evaluation of multiple fish species production in combination with hydroponics (aquaponic-polyculture) in the FishGlassHouse.

Crayfish in the systems

We have been testing red claw crayfish and marble crayfish in our aquaponics systems. Both species are doing well. The marble crayfish has been spawning without any problems and we are now observing the first eggs on our red claw crayfish.

Funded Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM)

COST Action FA1305 ‘EU Aquaponics Hub’ is offering financial support to eligible applicants to carry out a Short Term Scientific Mission that will specifically contribute to the scientific objectives of this COST Action. STSMs facilitate scientists going to an institution or laboratory in another country to foster collaboration, to learn a new technique or to take measurements using instruments and/or methods not available in their own institution/laboratory. Early Stage Researchers (up to 8 years after award of a PhD) will be given priority. The last application deadline for the 2015-2016 open call is 18 December 2015 for STSMs to be completed by the end of April 2016

COST FA1305 training school on Microbial Roles and Dynamics in Aquaponics

COST Action FA1305 is offering 12 places on the training school 4 Microbia-ponics: Microbial roles and dynamics in aquaponics, to be held by the University of Liege 25-28 April 2016. Successful applicants will be offered a maximum grant of €1200 as a contribution towards the costs of travel, accommodation and meals. The deadline for applications is February 29th 2016, see further information in Microbial roles and dynamics in aquaponics.

The training school will be delivered by Prof. Haïssam Jijakli (Plant Pathology and Urban Agriculture, University of Liège, Belgium), Prof. Amit Gross (Environmental Hydrology & Microbiology, Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, Israel), Dr. Peter Dapprich (Plant Pathology, South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences, Germany) and Prof. Sébastien Massart (Plant Pathology and Metagenomics, University of Liège, Belgium. The lectures and practical classes will be held mainly at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech Faculty, University of Liège where the microbiology laboratory, PAFF BOX (Plant and Fishing Farming Container) and a small RAS system are located.

Open house at the Iceland Ocean Cluster

Our aquaponics pilot units were presented to the many guests visiting our office at the open house at the Iceland Ocean Cluster on September 24th. The pak choi was extremely well welcomed by the guests. Isak, Ragnar and Ragnheidur told about the systems and the ideas behind the concept. The aquaponics game developed by university students was presented and also photos from our pilot units in Sudavogur in Reykjavik and the greenhouse farm Akur in South Iceland were shown. Many thanks to the many guests that came to our office!

Successful COST FA1305 training programme on commercial aquaponics

15 trainees from different European countries participated in the COST FA1305 Training Programme on Commercial Aquaponics held at the Ecovillage Solheimar in South Iceland September 8th-12th. The Training Programme was organized by Dr. Ragnheidur Thorarinsdottir, Prof. Kristin Vala Ragnarsdottir from the University of Iceland, Dr. Paul Rye Kledal from Institute of Global Food and Farming in Denmark and Mitja Kopina from Ponika in Slovenia.

The group visited the aquaponics pilot unit designed and built by Svinna-verkfraedi Ltd and students from the University of Iceland at the greenhouse farm Akur in South Iceland. The tilapia, salads, tomatoes, okra and other products from the pilot unit were grilled at site by the group – Excellent Slow Food.

The group also visited Fridheimar, a greenhouse producer that has opened the doors to tourists offering delicious tomato soup and telling the 20 years story of the company. Moreover, the trainees got to see and learn about the sustainable energy in Iceland based on geothermal and hydro power and about the nature and story. The last night of the course the sky opened an extraordinary aurora borealis show as a special treat to us after a great weeks work.

COST Action FA1305 is offering 15 places on the training school 3 Commercial Aquaponics to be held by the University of Iceland 9 – 12 September 2015. Successful applicants will be offered a maximum grant of €1120 as a contribution towards the costs of travel, accommodation and meals. The deadline for applications is August 12th 2015, see Commercial aquaponics training school .

The training school will be delivered by Dr. Ragnheidur Thorarinsdottir and profesor Kristin Vala Ragnarsdottir, University of Iceland, Dr. Paul Rye Kledal Institute of Global Food and Farming in Denmark and Dr. Mitja Kopina, Project Manager at Gnezdo d.o.o. and Ponika in Slovenia. The lectures and practical classes will mainly be conducted at the the ecovillage Solheimar South Iceland.
